"Zavàj" is a dialectal word in the Bolognese language that refers to objects that have become useless and no longer hold any value.
Zavàj is a "scartigianato" (a play on words in Italian between waste and craftsmanship) project that starts with zavàj, the scraps from production: it seeks them, examines them, and puts them together to transform them into something new.
Zavàj is a project of research and creative experimentation that enhances production waste through a circular economy approach, creating new forms and new opportunities.

Where is a "scartigiano"?
The idea of giving new value to production scraps was born in Castiglione dei Pepoli, a beautiful and fairly little town on the border between Emilia-Romagna and Tuscany, a place for passing through and walking.
Here, at 700 meters above sea level, there are chestnut groves, festivals, cultural associations, shops, lakes, snow, bars, fried crescentine, friends, and artisans.
Just like the place where it was born, Zavàj brings together many different things, in good company and for everyone.

Who does the "scartigiano" spend time with?
I will tell you who Alice is later, but first, let me tell you who she is with because – just like with the Zavàj – her endeavor doesn’t come from one person alone, but from a friendship that has sparked this project in Alice’s mind and heart.
Those who conceived Zavàj are surrounded by friends with whom they live, work, travel, and plan. These people are in Castiglione dei Pepoli, but also in Ferrara, Bologna, Rioveggio, Montesole, Florence, Rimini, Comacchio, Padua, Turin, Chioggia, Reggio Calabria, Bethlehem... there are so many places, as each one is the home of friends who move like "scartigiani" in their work: with the ideal of bringing people together to give shape to something new, observing reality for its inherent beauty, and enjoying the company that helps you look in the right direction.

Who is the "scartigiano"?
Zavàj was born from an idea by Alice Vaccari, an architect who loves friends and small, beautiful, fun things made by hand.
Alice enjoys staying behind the scenes, but in the end, she felt it was right to put herself out there, as you'll see her often, she's the easiest model to hire for Zavàj.
